Gordon College Bears Christian Witness in the Midst of Hatred

Despite having a legal case, Gordon College has elected not to use the courts against their enemies.

Our era is well summed up by the title of an old book by Dr. Francis Schaeffer: Escape from Reason.

When you attempt to follow many arguments against Christians back to a consistent starting point, you end up in dead-ends and collapsed bridges. We have become a people who react purely out of blind emotion—parroting baseless, “focus tested” talking-points from a political hack somewhere. The modern American mind seems largely incapable of processing what’s really being said.

No, it has not reached the point where believers are thrown again into the arena, being fed to lions, but I’m sure if we continue on the current path we’ll reach a modern equivalent. At root, this is all a tragic expression of people’s visceral hatred for God and His Law. That uncomfortable nagging, deep in their consciences, will remain as an irritant, even should they be successful in killing or banishing us all.

Thus we see the horrible treatment of Gordon College. As the Washington Times reports, “Gordon College accuses gay activists of discriminating against its Christian students.”

Kudos to Gordon College for standing their ground, and not picking up legal bludgeons, even when it’s obvious they could do so.

“Gordon College may well have a legal case against some of the organizations that have banished the college… But that’s not a course of action Gordon plans to pursue, said Gordon spokesman Rick Sweeney.

“We’re very grateful for the support,… at the end of the day, we’re still hopeful that the city will consider where there could be a middle ground to allow us to work with them again.”

“Gordon has taken the high road despite an onslaught to its reputation of near-biblical proportions.”

Perhaps some opponents will be enabled to see the students and administration of Gordon acting in line with the Messiah they profess:

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
—Isaiah 53:7

The true Church will always be hated by the surrounding world—”Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12)—our great challenge is to respond in a way that reflects our King, and surprises our tormentors. Many oppressors of the Church in history have been won to Christ by the response of those they were cruelly harming.

I am praying for that specific grace to be provided should the crosshairs be aimed in this direction.
